The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Alaska Cooperative Extension have partnered for more than 15 years to encourage salmon education in rural classrooms. This has included educator training, technical resources and development of classroom activities that incorporate the latest in science and local traditional knowledge. The materials and activities featured here are designed to integrate local and regional data and culture to promote a sense of place learning experience.

Identifying a need for salmon education resources for upper level students, Extension and USFWS partnered with Beverly Chmielarczyk, a former high school teacher from the Lower Kuskokwim School District, to develop a thematic unit that allows high school students to explore the global issues and politics surrounding Alaska’s Salmon in relevant learning activities. The unit provides opportunities for students to become the decision makers as they assume the roles of biologists, fisheries managers, community leaders and representatives of the various user groups. Teachers are provided with resources and background information to help make these experiences as real as possible and to help them understand the issues being addressed.
