Activity Sequence:
Part One-What is Commercial Fishing?
Read aloud with students from Alaska’s Wild Salmon ADFG (Pages 42-45).
As a class, write a good definition of commercial fishing. Have the students write the definition
in their fisheries notebooks.
Discuss with the class the major differences between subsistence and commercial fishing in Alaska.
Who are the people who subsistence and commercial fish? How is their gear different? Why do they fish?
Part Two-A Great Resource on the Web
Have the students open the listed ADFG website. The purpose of this lesson is to have the students
familiarize themselves with the different resources on the site. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game
website is a great resource for anything having to do with fisheries in Alaska
Give each student an ADFG Commercial Fishing Website Worksheet. They
should work independently to complete the questions. It can be done in class or as a homework
assignment.
Part Three-What You Learned
Before wrapping up the lesson have students return to their KWLcharts. In the space provided,
they should list at least three things they Learned about commercial fishing during the course of
the activity.
Wrap-up Discussion: Discuss with students the value of commercial fishing in Alaska.
What value, other than monetary, does commercial fishing add to the lives of Alaskans and Alaska
as a state? Who or what else benefits from commercial fishing?
