Fisheries Management

[Biologists electrofishing]

Alaska has the healthiest stocks of wild fish and some of the most pristine aquatic habitats in the world. However, this situation isn't guaranteed to continue. The same problems facing fish and their habitats in other areas can occur here without proper management. Biologists representing state and federal agencies, Native corporations, and villages are cooperating on the monumental task of monitoring the status and trends of our fisheries and aquatic habitats. Determining how a limited resource is to be shared among subsistence, commercial, and recreational fishing interests is an important task for today's fisheries managers.
